"No one has ascended to heaven except He who came down from heaven—the Son of Man."
1. No One Has Ascended to Heaven Except the Son of Man
Yeshua states plainly to Nicodemus that entry and ascension into heaven belong exclusively to Him:
John 3:13:
"No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man."
2. King David Is Still in His Grave (Did Not Ascend to Heaven)
On the Day of Pentecost, the Apostle Peter addresses the crowd regarding the resurrection, explicitly confirming that even the greatest king of Israel did not go to heaven upon death:
Acts 2:29:
"Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day."
Acts 2:34:
"For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, 'The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand...'"
3. The Dead Know Nothing (The State of the Grave)
Scripture consistently describes the state of physical death as an unconscious "sleep" in the dust, awaiting the resurrection, rather than an immediate departure of an active soul to another realm:
Ecclesiastes 9:5:
"For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even their name is forgotten."
Ecclesiastes 9:10:
"Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom."
Psalm 146:4:
"When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing [their thoughts perish]."
Psalm 115:17:
"It is not the dead who praise the Lord, those who go down to the place of silence..."
Job 14:12:
"So he lies down and does not rise; till the heavens are no more, people will not awake or be roused from their sleep."
How These Connect with the Hope of Resurrection
Taken together, these passages form the scriptural foundation for the doctrine of the resurrection at the last day:
Death as Sleep: Humans do not possess inherent immortality or float immediately to heaven at death; they rest in the grave awaiting the call of Christ (John 5:28–29, 1 Thessalonians 4:13–16).
Christ as the Firstfruits: Jesus alone has conquered death, risen, and ascended to the right hand of the Father (1 Corinthians 15:20–23).
The Promise for Believers: Faithful servants like King David wait peacefully in the grave until the return of Christ, when the trumpet sounds and the dead in Christ rise first.
